A recent wind tunnel test by our friend from Cyclingnews.com compared 11 top-tier road bikes, all different brands, evaluating their aerodynamic performance. Among the tested bikes, the Cervélo S5, Factor OSTRO VAM, and Scott Foil RC emerged as top performers. Let’s dive into the results and see how these superbikes stacked up.

What Was Tested?

In the study, several key factors were considered to assess aerodynamic performance:

  1. Drag Coefficient (CdA): Measured in square meters, quantifying how easily air passes over the bike.
  2. Yaw Angles: The bikes were tested at various yaw angles, simulating different wind conditions, from headwinds to crosswinds.
  3. Bike-Only and Rider-On Testing: Both the bike by itself and with a rider were tested to capture real-world aerodynamic performance.

These tests were conducted at 40km/h, a representative speed for amateur races, fast club rides, or slower professional peloton paces. The study measured the aerodynamic performance over a range of yaw angles, from -15 to +15 degrees, accounting for crosswinds and headwinds. What was also considered, was that consistent variables such as bike size, tire choices, and rider position were standardized to ensure reliable data.

Factor OSTRO VAM road bike

1. Factor OSTRO VAM

The Factor OSTRO VAM took the lead in our bike-only test, proving its exceptional aerodynamics and winning performance. As the second-lightest bike in the study at just 7.23kg, the OSTRO VAM excels not only in aero efficiency but also in its ability to hold speed effortlessly across different wind and terrain conditions.

Perfect for both sprints and climbs, this bike offers incredible versatility with advanced aerodynamics—an ideal all-rounder for UAE cyclists. Available at Wolfi’s, you can fully customize your own OSTRO VAM, making sure you stand out on any ride across the UAE, whether at Al Qudra Cycling Track, Al Hudayriyat Cycling track or any other cycling tracks across the Emirates.

Scott File RC Pro Road Bike

2. Scott Foil RC

The Scott Foil RC performed exceptionally well, placing 2nd overall in the study. Although not the lightest bike, it excelled in aerodynamic efficiency, especially on flatter terrain where its aero-focused design thrives.

The Foil’s ability to maintain speed in the UAE’s unique crosswinds and headwinds makes it an ideal choice for local riders seeking an edge on tracks like Al Qudra, Nad Al Sheba, and Al Hudayriyat. Designed for speed and aerodynamics, this bike shines in road races and fast-paced group rides, giving you the advantage you need on the UAE's top cycling routes.

Cervelo S5 Road Bike

3. Cervélo S5

The Cervélo S5 is a dedicated aero bike with deep tubes and a v-shaped cockpit. While it’s one of the heavier bikes in the study, its aerodynamic efficiency shone through, particularly at zero yaw (head-on wind). This makes it an ideal bike for high-speed riding on flat terrain.

Known for its sleek design, the S5 is a favorite among pro cyclists and sprinters, offering a balance of power and aerodynamics. It comes as no surprise, that the Cervélo S5 is one of our most popular bikes sold at Wolfi’s.

The Cervélo S5 road bike is the perfect companion for UAE’s iconic cycling tracks. Known for its aerodynamic design and speed-focused performance, the S5 shines on long, smooth routes like the Al Qudra Cycling Track, where its stability and power let you cruise effortlessly. Take it for a ride at Nad Al Sheba or the Al Hudayriyat Island cycling track in Abu Dhabi, where its precision and handling excel through every turn. Whether you're racing the straight stretches of Al Qudra or exploring the variety of loops on Al Hudayriyat Island, the Cervélo S5 brings a thrilling experience to each ride.

Key Takeaways from the Study:

While these three bikes demonstrated superior aerodynamic performance, the study also highlighted a few key takeaways for cyclists considering upgrades:

Aerodynamics vs. Weight:
The study showed that aerodynamics is essential but not the only factor. For many riders, weight, comfort, and ride quality are equally important when choosing a bike. If you’re not sure what you need to prioritize, come chat to one of our experts in-store at any of our Wolfi’s locations, and we’ll help you select the perfect bike.

Consider a Helmet First:
If you’re looking to make an immediate performance improvement, consider investing in an aero helmet before splurging on a new bike. The study found that an aero helmet can save up to 12 watts, providing significant performance gains at a much lower cost. We stock many brilliant aero helmet brands, including Kask, Abus, Scott, and many more. You can try on the options in-store, or view the options online here.

Upgrading Wheels
Deep-section aero wheels can also offer watt-saving benefits. While not as impactful as a new frame, upgrading your wheels can help reduce drag and improve overall speed. From Dt Swiss, Lightweight, Zipp, BlackInc, and many more, browse our impressive collection here.

Here’s what’s important…

The Cervélo S5, Factor OSTRO VAM, and Scott Foil RC are top-tier superbikes, each offering distinct aerodynamic advantages.

Whether you’re chasing speed, versatility, or the latest in technological innovation, these bikes will elevate your performance on the road. However, keep in mind that aerodynamics is just one piece of the puzzle. For some, smaller, more affordable upgrades like helmets or wheels may provide significant performance gains without the need to invest in a whole new bike.
